    General FAQ   

    How many schools are there? There are a total of 83 schools and several Pre-K Centers. There are 8 educational centers comprised of Exceptional Student Services, alternative education and prepatory education.

    How can I get a list of schools, addresses, telephone numbers, and principals' names? Visit the Directories online or Call Human Resources at 922-5485.

    Do students in elementary and middle schools have to wear uniforms? Yes. Uniforms are currently mandatory in all elementary schools (plain white top with a collar and navy bottoms) and in all middle schools (plain navy top with a collar and khaki bottoms). More info 

    What charter schools does the school system currently have opened?

    Community School for Apprenticeship Learning, Contact the Head Master at 1555 Madison Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70802, 225-336-1410 or 225-336-1414.

    J.K. Haynes Elementary Charter School, A school for Pre-K through 5th grade. Total number of students is 138. Contact the director at 8600 Elm Grove Garden Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70807, Ph 225-774-1311, Fax 225-7741323.  Children's Charter School An elementary school for Pre-K through 5. Total number of students is approx. 160. Contact the director at 1143 North Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802, Ph 225-387-9273, Fax 225-387-9272.

    Is the district accepting charter school proposals?

    The district will accept charter school proposals from January 2010 through March 2010. Proposals will be evaluated by the charter proposal review committee in April 2010, who will then make a recommendation to the School Board.

    Process for Charter/Autonomous School Proposals

    The timeline for accepting, reviewing, and approving proposals for charter and autonomous schools for the 2010-2011 school year is as follows:

    1. The application period begins the first business day in January and continues through the last business day of February.  All applications must be received in the Office of the Superintendent within this time frame.

    2. All applications will be reviewed by the Charter School Proposal Review Committee between the first business day in March and the last business day in March.  Within this time period, the committee may choose to interview charter/autonomous school applicants.

    3. The Charter School Proposal Review Committee will offer a recommendation to the Instructional Pupil Services Committee during its regular meeting April, which will be forwarded to the full School Board.

    4. During its regular, monthly meeting, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will vote on the recommendations of the Instructional Pupil Services Committee.

    Who would I contact if my child has ADHD or dyslexia?  Contact Exceptional Student Services , PH 225-929-8600. We have special programming for dyslexia at all levels. 

    Where is the Transfer Office located? The School Transfer Office is located at Central Office, 1050 South Foster Drive, Room 40. The phone number is 225-922-5627. More info

    What summer programs do you offer? Each school offers different programs. There is a process of recommendation that the principal is to complete before a student can be referred for enrollment in summer program. Please contact your school's principal.

    How old does my child have to be to enter Pre-K? Kindergarten? Pre-K students must be 4-years-old on or before September 30 of the year entering school. Kindergarten students must be 5-years-old on or before September 30 of the year entering school. More info

    What do I need to do to enroll my child in Pre-K or K? The following items are required for enrollment Child's birth certificate Social Security card Documentation of immunizations (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B, Polio, and two doses of Measles/Mumps/Rubella) Proof of residence (lease agreement, utility bill, telephone bill or notarized affidavit).     When do I register my child for Pre-K or K? Anytime between March 16 and August 19, the earlier the better. More info
