What Is Montessori?

Philosophy-
Montessori is an approach to the education of children.  It is a way of looking at and understanding children. It is a view of how children develop and learn which has been translated into a systematic method of education based upon careful scientific study.

The foundation of the Montessori philosophy:

1. Multi-aged grouping- At Belfair Montessori the students are divided into three groups: Primary (pre-school and kindergarten), Elementary (Grades 1-3 and one class of Grades 2-5 which will progress into a grade 4-5 class).  Multi-age grouping lends itself to child to child teaching, interaction and socialization.

2. Prepared environment-
The child learns directly from the environment, not the teacher.  The program is designed to facilitate learning through prepared lessons, exploration and creativity.  This is accomplished through specially designed equipment and materials specifically used in a Montessori environment.

3. Individual or Small Group Instruction-
The children learn from their environment, not through teacher lecture.  Most instruction is given individually or in groups of two or three.  When children are ready, they move through the curriculum.  When the child masters a concept he moves on to the next step in the curriculum and does not have to wait for anyone else to do the same.  On the other hand, if a child needs to further explore a concept, he is afforded the time.

Montessori in EBR

The Montessori program was introduced into the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in 1988.  The program was part of the Redesign program, which was a form of voluntary desegregation.  It was a program within the traditional schools of Polk, Howell Park, and Tanglewood Elementary.  In 1977 the program was moved to Belfair and Dufrocq Elementary under the  new desegregation plan and consent decree.

Belfair Montessori Magnet

Belfair Montessori Magnet has four primary classes: three preschool and Kindergarten combination classes and one primary class which consists of preschool through first grade. There are three Montessori elementary classes.  Two classes hold grades first through third and another which has second through fifth, which will progress yearly until it becomes a fourth and fifth grade class. The Montessori program is an all day program (8:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m.).

Transportation is provided for all children in the program who live outside of the Belfair attendance zone.  Before and after school care is offered.
